Principal Message

Gamar hatimah tovah to our students and families observing Yom Kippur. I wish you a meaningful Yom Kippur on Sunday and Monday.

Thursday, September 15 marked the beginning of Latinx Heritage Month.  Seattle Public Schools and Lincoln High School celebrate and recognize the many achievements and important accomplishments and contributions from our Hispanic community.  Latinx Heritage Month began as a week-long celebration in 1968 before it was expanded to a month by President Reagan in 1988.  There are some great resources you can access:

About Hispanic Heritage Month Additionally, our SPS Ethnic Studies Department has compiled some great resources for students, families and educators.

This week we began our first “Walk to Support” day as part of our Mentorship program.  This came directly out of student feedback last year with a request to have built in time during the week where students can receive additional academic support and/or engage in self-directed study and reflection.  On a typical week, students will have an hour of walk to support on Wednesday.  Students are able to sign up to get this additional support, retake exams, or work on coursework with any of their teachers.  Students who don’t sign up for additional help will be able to stay in their mentorship class for self-directed study or to work on other projects as part of their post-secondary planning.

This week, nearly 225 students signed up to “walk” for additional support.  Students who wish to get this help need to sign up with their selected teacher by Tuesday each week.  We know early intervention and small-group support is essential for helping our students grow academically.  I encourage you to talk with your student to find out how they used their walk to support day. Walk to support is not a time where students can leave campus to run errands.

Finally, we are hoping to gather some additional support from families in purchasing the ASB card and optional universal supply fee.   If you are unsure of what these funds support, I encourage you to take a moment to read more about them at the end of our newsletter.

Purchas your ASB Cards ($50) Scholarships are available to students to cover a partial or full cost of the ASB card.

Universal Supply Fee ($85): The universal supply fee is optional but encouraged as part of our partnerships with our families and community. Families in need of financial support can opt to pay an amount that supports their individual budgets.

As always, thank you for your support and partnership.  I hope you have a restful weekend.

-Corey, Principal

SAT – October 11th

Lincoln High School welcomes all of our 12 grade students for the in-school SAT on Wednesday, Oct 11, 2023.  We will be providing the SAT at no cost to our senior class on our campus, during the school day.  Students will report to the school gym at 8:30am and the test will begin at 9am.  The test will end around 1:30pm, with students taking lunch from 1:40-2:25pm. Students will be able to bring their own lunch, leave campus, or get a cold lunch option from school.  Students with accommodations may have a different schedule.  More information will be shared with those families early next week.

If you are interested in prepping for exam day, College Board has provided an SAT study tool that is available to all of our seniors.  Log into your College Board account to access this information (you will also need this account to report scores to colleges).  In addition, the Seattle Public Library provides access to Tutor.com to all of our students.  Time: 8:00 – 2:30

  •  Oct 11 – SAT day for all seniors (so no families of seniors can help)
  • Oct 12 – SAT extended time

Washington State Healthy Youth Survey/Youth Risk Behavior Survey 2023

Our school is participating in the Washington State Healthy Youth Survey and Youth Risk Behaviors Survey during fall 2023. One of the surveys will be given to students in Grades 9-12 in SPS. The HYS/YRBS includes questions related to physical activity and diet, unintentional and intentional injury, substance use, sexual behaviors, abuse, risk and protective factors, and access to school-based services. Survey results are used by schools, communities, and state agencies to plan programs to support our youth and reduce their risks. Participation in the survey is voluntary and the students’ answers are anonymous. There are no codes or information used to match a survey to a student. Please click on and read the Parent and Student Notification Letter below for more information about the HYS/YRBS.

National Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month

September is National Suicide Prevention Month. All month, mental health advocates, prevention organizations, survivors, allies, and community members unite to promote suicide prevention awareness. We know that suicide is the second leading cause of death in ages amongst youth and young adults 10-34 years old.

By knowing the signs, asking questions, and helping connect others to support, each person plays an important role in preventing suicide. Guiding documents on how to respond to a student experiencing suicide and to learn more about warning signs, prevention supports, and resources in the community, visit the SPS Suicide Prevention and Intervention webpage.

ASB Cards, Yearbooks, and Universal Supply Fees

It is time to purchase your ASB membership, yearbook, and pay the Universal Supply fee.  Please log into the Source to make your purchases. Please consider helping support other families in our community by adding on an additional donation when purchasing an ASB card and/or paying the Universal Supply Fee.

  • ASB Cards ($50): We encourage all students to purchase an Associated Student Body (ASB) card. ASB card sales are our primary source of funding for all our extracurricular activities: clubs, athletics, after-school activities, etc. Students who purchase an ASB card will be eligible for various discounts throughout the year. Students who participate in any WIAA athletics or are active members in any clubs are required to purchase an ASB card. Scholarships are available to students to cover a partial or full cost of the ASB card. Purchase ASB cards online.
  • Yearbook (Price $65 with an ASB card, $80 without): Yearbook sales will occur throughout the 2023-24 school year during select dates with the first sale in the fall. Please make sure you purchase your yearbook during the open windows. Once sales are closed, we are not able to order extras for families who missed the deadline.
  • Universal Supply Fee ($85): Our Universal Supply Fee helps to support all the learning activities that happen in our classroom that extend beyond base curriculum. As a project-based school, the universal supply fee provides the resources for the deeper learning that happens throughout the year and helps ensure students have access to the tools they need. The universal supply fee is optional but encouraged as part of our partnerships with our families and community. Families in need of financial support can opt to pay an amount that supports their individual budgets.  Purchase your universal supply fee online.

Phone Zone

Lincoln is currently piloting different approaches with “phone zones” in class.  The goal of the phone zone is to give a place where students can routinely put their phone away for class to focus on engagement.  There are different versions of what these phone zones look like depending on the classroom.

We know that there are always unique learning circumstances with our students and with the pilot of our phone zones, we will be working with students for feedback and ideas.  We also ask your support.  As families, please avoid texting and/or calling your student during class time and use our main phone number if you need to reach your student during a class period.  We also hope families will take this time to talk with their student about the distractions cell phones and other technology can cause and the benefits from reducing screen time while at school.
