Summer Career Quest Internships provide students with career exploration and development opportunities.  Student-interns will work closely with their internship host to discuss solutions and ideas while developing problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, presentation and networking skills.  Students participate in a wide range of workplace activities to gain skills and knowledge for specific occupations, while being supported by weekly career development class time with a Seattle Public Schools Career Quest teacher. 

Program Details:

• Internships for Summer 2024 will take place from July 9-August 2.
• Interns work 5.5 hours per day (1/2 hour unpaid lunch), Tuesday-Thursday at 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. at the workplace.
• SPS Career Quest will find and place your intern(s) through our application process based on career pathway and personal interests.

The Wastewater Treatment Division (WTD) is partnering with the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust to provide a high school summer internship program.  We are seeking 12 interns interested in learning how government agencies, nonprofit organizations and local communities influence the health of the waterways in the Puget Sound region. Interns will gain a deep understanding of the role we all play in this issue, and the careers that contribute to improving water quality and protecting the environment. Interns will learn about environmental and social justice issues by participating in field trips and workshops. A large component of the internship involves practicing communication skills and improving public speaking. The goal is for interns to pass on the knowledge they gain to members of their school and community.

Who: For high school youth at least 16 years old when program begins on July 8. We strongly encourage applicants who are underrepresented in environmental careers and new to exploring environmental topics.

King County Parks Youth Conservation Corps is a summer internship program that provides 10 high school-aged youth environmental learning opportunities.  This seven-week program runs from July 8 –to August 15, 2024. Interns will work with King County Parks & Recreation Division staff at multiple Parks locations to better understand the breadth and depth of environmental justice, ecological restoration, and parks and recreation management practices. The program will provide growth and learning opportunities, foster positive work relationships, and support youth in experiencing the work life environment.

What: Two pathways to jumpstart a career in biotech. Students gain hands-on training in a biomanufacturing lab, network with industry experts, increase their job opportunities upon completion and earn 9 college credits with free tuition through Running Start. This program can be taken in conjunction with a full-time high school schedule.

• Pathway 1: Basics of Biomanufacturing Certificate (9 months) – HS students learn basic lab techniques in biomanufacturing, explore careers, and interact with industry mentors – for 11th and 12th graders
• Pathway 2: Fred Hutch Lab Technician Certificate (2 years) – Expand upon the basics of the biomanufacturing certificate (pathway 1) by collaborating with scientists at Fred Hutch and expanding hands-on training with cutting edge technologies at Shoreline Community College – for rising seniors

The Aeronautical Science Pathway (ASP) program is designed for high school juniors and seniors who want to become professional pilots or work in one of many aviation operations management fields, such as unmanned aerial systems (drones), air traffic control, airport management, or airline dispatch. Six college-level courses will be embedded within each yearlong course, all which are core to earning an Associate and a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Aeronautical Science at Green River College.

Private Pilot Ground School (PPGS) is a three-week summer course that provides the opportunity for rising 9th-12th grade students to explore the world of aviation while creating a base of aeronautical knowledge that pilots need to successfully pass the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) private pilot exam.

The 2024 SCA Seattle Summer Urban Green Crew will work with local partners to do invasive species maintenance, erosion control, trail maintenance, and mulching.

The majority of the crew’s work will be in parks and green spaces in the Seattle area. The crew will also spend three days and two nights working with the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, camping at Denny Creek Campground. SCA will provide all food, transportation, and gear for this trip.

The crew will take part in environmental education and green job readiness activities throughout the week. This includes field trips to a number of sites in the region every Friday. Students sare paid $20/hour, 33-35 hours per week for 7 weeks

Who: The crew will be comprised of 12 students, ages 14-19, and 2 adult crew leaders. Housing is not provided, except during the camping trip.

• Follow established policies, procedures and guidelines to protect both our clients and Bank of America

Required Skills:

• Have a passion to engage and educate clients with our industry leading digital banking solutions

If so, the Albers Summer Business Institute (SBI) is a great way for them to sample the instruction, interactions, and opportunities that business school offers.

SBI at Seattle University is a credit-bearing, project-based summer business camp for high school students focused on social entrepreneurship.

The program provides youth from African-American, Latino/Hispanic, Native American Indigenous, Pacific Islander, Hmong American, and Nepalese American heritages the opportunity to explore entrepreneurship, data visualization, economics, and more.

Seattle ACAP (the Accounting Career Awareness Program) is pleased to invite applicants to its summer 2024 Residency Week program at the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business. ACAP’s mission is to help underrepresented students realize academic and career opportunities in accounting and business.

This free, week-long residential program for rising WA state high school participants to accounting, and the many opportunities offered in a field that is actively seeking to diversify its workforce. What: Join us for a fun, two-week introduction to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (Fred Hutch) and the research being conducted here. Fred Hutch has an international reputation for its pioneering research in bone marrow and stem cell transplantation and other immune-based cancer therapies. We also are well-known for our work in many other areas of biomedical research, including cancer prevention, public health, epidemiology, and biostatistics. Participants will conduct hands-on activities in Fred Hutch’s training labs, tour working labs, meet students and scientists at different stages of their careers, and talk about next steps you can take if you are interested in biomedical research. What: Duwamish Valley Youth Core is a paid environmentally based job skills program for teens. Participants spend a significant amount of time outdoors in the South Park and Georgetown communities and natural areas learning about ecology and job skills. The program is equal parts environmental science, job skills training, stewardship and outdoor hands-on work. We seek a diverse group of teens to create a balanced team.

Paid Internship opportunity for female-identifying youth, 17 years old and older. You Grow Girl! is accepting applications for their upcoming cohort for their Peer Support Vocational Training Program. Youth with lived experiences participating in mental health and other service systems who are interested in supporting systems-involved middle-school aged youth through peer mentorship are encouraged to apply. Completion of this program includes a stipend of $1,000 and attainment of industry recognized professional credentials and employment opportunities. What do interns do? Learn professional and therapeutic skills on how to be a youth peer mentor to younger youth who are struggling through middle school and relationships. They will be matched with a master’s level clinician as a peer mentor throughout the process. They will engage in preparation and begin the process of obtaining their industry recognized certifications from the Healthcare Authority, Department of Health, and Antioch University. Part of the training program is field experience working with youth. Upon successful completion of the program, they will receive $1,000 stipend be eligible for employment with either You Grow Girl! or one of our partners to work with youth making (between $20-25 hour).

What are the criteria for a successful application? At least 17 years old, female-identifying history of system-involvement. We are looking for individuals who have natural leadership skills but may not always use them in the right way. Individuals who care about their community members love sharing their life experiences of navigating life and overcoming adversity. We want those usually identified as “at-risk” “hard to serve.” Applicants will apply online. They don’t need a resume; if being referred by the school who will give credit for this program, they should list a school representative.

What is the deadline, if any, to apply? Year-round enrollment; no deadline. New cohort begins every second Monday of the month.

What is the timeframe of the internship? Approximately 4-6 weeks. It’s a 40-hour training hybrid program. They will be expected to attend sessions at our Seattle location as well as by Zoom after school and/or on Saturdays.

Youth Community Program is a non-residential, day program for 15 to 18-year-olds. With the experience of field staff guiding them, participants complete service projects in their own community each day and return home at night. In RadioActive Youth Media’s fun and hands-on summer Intro to Radio Journalism Workshop, teens learn radio journalism and storytelling skills, build confidence and work with others while creating a true radio story about one person.

What: This program will specifically allow teen artists of color to hone their artwork under the guidance of professional mentors. This is a great way for teens to better their craft, build connections in the arts community, and present their art! This mentorship is for teens interested in visual arts (digital arts, painting, drawing, sculpture, etc.), writing (poetry, creative nonfiction, etc.) and performing arts (musical theater, acting, etc.). 

Teens will be put into either a visual arts, writing, or performing arts cohort, and each group will be paired with a professional mentor of color to create or workshop a piece specifically for the program showcase. Teens will also have the opportunity to hear from BIPOC industry experts (past panelists have ranged from the Emmy-winning composer of Bridgerton, Kris Bowers, to Disney animator Kee Suong) and participate in skill-building workshops.

The Seattle Youth Employment Program (SYEP) supports young people (ages 16 to 24) from qualifying-income households and communities that experience racial, social, and economic disparities. The goal is to increase youth and young adults’ ability to pursue careers that pay well and are meaningful to them.

What: The Museum of Popular Culture’s (MoPOP) Volunteer Student Program participants will perform various volunteer roles, interact with the diverse visiting population of the museum visitors and staff, and learn about career opportunities at nonprofit institutions and museums. We’re seeking applicants who are excited about pop culture and who are interested in building their customer service and public speaking skills. Students will perform three of our standard volunteer positions, including Information Desk, Sound Lab, and our educational POPstops. These roles are an excellent opportunity to be a museum ambassador as well as build confidence and interpersonal skills. Students will also meet with MoPOP Staff about museum careers and to connect with other youth volunteers in the program.

Dates: 40-60 hours between July 10, 2023 and September 1, 2023 (choose your own schedule)

MoPOP’s Youth Advisory Board (you can just call it YAB) gives you a voice in teen programming at the museum and an opportunity to give back to your community. You’ll collaborate with local musicians, artists, and community groups while creating original content for the Voice Box exhibit and YAB social media. Not a bad way to rack up some community service hours.

Camp Bill is a series of fun and interesting programs offered every summer. Students can sign up for one-week acting camps where they will be introduced to Shakespeare’s works, practice basic acting concepts, and play fun improv games with new friends. They can also participate in a 3-week “production intensive” camp where middle and high school students create their own full productions. In these 3-week camps, teaching artists direct students not only in rehearsal and performance, but to design and build the set and costumes for their production! There’s something for almost every age and level.

Work with youth ages 5-17 each week to develop skills and perform short productions ranging from musical adaptations like Hamilton and Frozen, and news stories from the worlds of Star Wars and Minecraft. Interns will develop classroom/rehearsal management skills and gain firsthand experience in bringing a script from page to stage with young performers, including observing and collaborating with experienced teaching artists and leading games and exercises. Reel Queer Youth (RQY) is a video production and media literacy program for LGBTQ+ youth
and allies grades 9–12.
During this week-long camp, participants will create a film using available media and tools, under the guidance of Reel Queer Youth facilitators and special film industry guests. We’ll learn about different forms of filmmaking (narrative, documentary, experimental), and how story and identity can be shared through each. We’ll also cover planning a production, recording video and sound, and editing to create dynamic films.

Calling all creative writers! Join us for a new series of FREE creative writing workshops, hosted by TeenTix in collaboration with On the Boards.

In each Art Begets Art mini-workshop, you’ll attend a performance at the On the Boards, then produce a piece of creative writing in response to the performance. Mini-workshops consist of three meetings: a pre-meeting to learn about the performance you’ll be seeing, the performance itself, and a post-meeting to work on your creative writing.

You’ll get to discuss the performance with other art-loving teens, meet the artist after the show, and receive individual mentorship from a professional writer on your work. There will also be an opportunity to publish your work on the TeenTix blog and receive a stipend for publication!

What: For summer 2024, we are offering an in-person programs led by PhD-level scientists and educators. Students will learn how to work in a research laboratory environment and learn about topics including biochemistry, immunotherapy, gene editing, and infectious diseases. Students will also participate in workshops on college readiness and career exploration. These programs provide students with a solid foundation for a future career in biomedical research. There is no cost to participate.

CHPA is a 6-session high school program designed to help high school students explore the health professions in an engaging, and supportive atmosphere. The University of Washington School of Pharmacy is pleased to announce the 2022 Students Exploring Pharmacy (STEP) summer camp! STEP is a 4-day program designed to inspire high school students as they explore pharmacy as a career option. Students engage in hands-on activities that provide an introduction to pharmacy practice and perspective on the numerous ways a pharmacist contributes to improving people’s health—in ways that go far beyond dispensing medications.

STEP will occur July 18-21, 2022, at the University of Washington campus and is open to students in grades 9-12 as of Autumn 2022, including incoming freshmen.  An application is required and students should be prepared to submit a personal statement discussing their interest in health, wellness, healing, medical care, or related fields. The Summer High School Internship Program (SHIP) is a competitive, eight-week, full-time paid internship for rising 12th graders. The program is specifically designed for students from backgrounds underrepresented in biomedical science.

Selected interns attend an orientation day, then begin the internship with one week of hands-on training on laboratory safety techniques and skills in the Fred Hutch Training Labs. Interns are paired and immersed in mentored activities in a Fred Hutch research group in Seattle for the remaining seven weeks.

Interns also participate in research education seminars, attend professional development workshops focused on college and careers and enjoy social activities with their teams and peers. The program culminates with intern presentations to the Fred Hutch community.

LawYours is a free event dedicated to helping underrepresented Puget Sound-area high school students explore the field of law. This event takes place at Seattle University School of Law on Wednesday, August 10. Register by July 1, 2022

The Lifeguard Training Team is a FREE summer program designed to train and certify Seattle’s youth in lifesaving skills. The eight-week program for youth ages 15-18 will train participants to be lifeguards and build other important job skills. Seattle Parks and Recreation provides training, books, uniforms, and basic materials at no charge. The Lifeguard Training Team includes a full American Red Cross lifeguard training course, and much more! Participants get the opportunity to test for certification at the end of the program.

Who: Youth ages 15 – 18

When: June 27th – August 18th, Monday – Thursday, 1 pm – 5 pm

King County officially launched the King County Youth Council here at United Way of King County! If you recall, we ran the Youth Commission that identified 5 recommendations that would support the success of BIPOC Youth. At its conclusion in Feb 2022, we shared that those youth (Ruby, Tsion, McCoy, Noah, Paris, Hikma, and Devan) would build off these lessons to start the Youth Council, which will focus on living their findings in the report, but also (1) move $100,000 into youth identified issues in our region and (2) produce a BIPOC Youth Policy Agenda (a way to leverage the grantmaking and research to push for systemic changes).

Who: 10 Community Investment & Policy Managers, ages 16-25

When: commit 10-15 hours each month from March 28th – Dec 31 2022.

Compensation: Stipend of $5,000

The Seattle University AI4ALL is an experience for high school students interested in criminal law and artificial intelligence (AI). Students will learn about the intersection of modern technology and criminal justice issues throughout the two weeks, such as bias and equity. This program is project-focused and will include engagement with law enforcement and Seattle area tech companies.

Seattle University offers full, holistic, merit scholarships to students who need financial assistance to attend. Priority is given to students who are under-represented in higher education, including Black/African American, Hmong American, Latino/Hispanic, Indigenous/Native American, Nepalese American, and Pacific Islander descents. What: A two-part program for high school juniors focused on the history and future exploration of space by NASA and topics in Earth and Space Science. Fees apply, but financial assistance is available.

• Phase 1: Online course provided at no-cost, designed in partnership with NASA and University of Washington, which provides students the opportunity to earn five UW college credits.
• Phase 2: A week-long residency experience where students work with STEM professionals, NASA scientists, university students, and STEM educators.

Who: High school juniors, residents of Washington State

When: October 31, 2023 – March 12, 2024 (phase 1) and July and August 2024 (phase 2)

Who: Provides rising 9th-12th graders with training and experience to take their leadership skills to the next level, all while earning service hours and volunteer hours.

What: Spend two weeks mentoring campers by coaching them through fun and engaging math activities, helping them forge friendships, gain confidence, and seeing their potential in STEM.

The 2-week Summer Immersion Program (SIP) welcomes current 9th-11th graders to join live virtual classrooms. You’ll make lifelong friendships as you learn web design, creating real-world projects in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

You’ll even get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at industry-leading companies like EA, Pfizer, and ViacomCBS.

Plus, all SIP students can access need-based grants up to $500 for completing the program!

A Self-Paced Program is an alternative option that gives current 9th-12th graders the flexibility to earn beginner-level badges in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript or an intermediate-level badge in Python for cybersecurity through independent study.

Boeing invites students from select Boeing-partnered high schools and community/technical colleges in Washington state to take part in manufacturing student development programs. Since 2015, more than 250 students have participated in a Boeing manufacturing student development program.

These programs provide students with:

Coding for Medicine is an innovative organization dedicated to teach coding skills to young people (9th – 12th graders) based on real-life problems. Primary areas are biology and medicine, but also offer interesting modules like “Calculus Meets Coding” to teach calculus and coding together and “Catching Pokemon with Coding” to teach coding to the middle-school students. Private Pilot Ground School (PPGS) is a unique course that provides the opportunity for rising 9th – 12th-grade students to explore the world of aviation while creating a base of aeronautical knowledge that pilots need to successfully pass the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) private pilot exam.

When: Monday, June 27th, 2022 – Friday, July 15th, 2022 (No class Monday, July 4) from 8:30 am – 3:30 pm

Benefit: earn 0.5 high school elective credit, student cannot miss more than two days of class
