Letter from the Principal

I have recently been talking with some of our seniors about their post-secondary plans.  Many of our seniors are awaiting responses from colleges, internships, scholarships, and more.  It is always exciting to hear from our seniors as they make plans for their future.

Post-secondary planning is an important part of the high school experience.  We work with our students throughout their four years as they prepare for life after high school.  Most recently, we held our first-ever Seattle Promise Application Day! During mentorship, representatives from the Seattle Promise program came to Lincoln to partner with our teachers and Counseling Crew to assist our senior class in applying for the Seattle Promise scholarship program. It was a huge success with over 62% of our Seniors having now signed up for Seattle Promise.

The Seattle Promise is a program that allows students to attend any of the Seattle Colleges (North, Central, South) tuition-free for the first 90 credits towards their Associate degree. The Seattle Colleges offer a wide variety of skilled/technical programs and Associate degrees that can be utilized to transfer to larger 4-year universities and colleges. Students in the Seattle Promise program also receive additional academic support during their time at the college.

We encouraged all seniors to apply for this program as it is an excellent opportunity, whether as a first-choice or as a stable back-up plan. Additionally, there is no GPA or income restrictions to be eligible for the scholarship. Any student graduating from Lincoln is eligible.

If your student was absent or unable to apply to the Seattle Promise scholarship, it isn’t too late! The application deadline is February 16, 2024. Students can drop by the LHS Counseling Center for support, and even book an appointment with our very own Seattle Promise representative, Mr. Aurelio at aurelio.valdez@seattlecolleges.edu

I was talking to some more students at lunch and asking what they planned to do over the winter break.  A few caught my interest in sharing the books they planned to check and read. Literacy is such an important part of the learning process and is integral to the development of curiosity, personal enjoyment, and being a lifelong learner.  In a recent survey, 79% of Lincoln students reported they enjoy reading.  The Lincoln library is a true hub of our community and provides space not only for academic learning but also as an area of social interaction, exploration, and enjoyment.  We are proud of our library and the connections our students have with everything that it offers.

As of this week we have checked out 2332 books so far this year. Lincoln has the second highest number of books circulated among high schools in the district – which makes sense because we’re the biggest – but ALSO we have the second highest circulation per student among high schools in the district so far this year! If you are interested in what your student might be reading – this year, the most popular titles are graphic novels and mysteries.

Our library is a place for community and connection. So far, we have 156 students signed up to volunteer, with about 5-15 students volunteering each day. Volunteers process new books, create displays, shelve, inventory, write reviews, and run the library social media.  Specifically, this month we have had hundreds of books on display written by Native/Indigenous authors – highlighting many on them insta (@lincolnlibrarylynx)

As always, I thank you for your partnership and support.  I hope you have a nice weekend.

Sincerely,

Corey, Principal

1st Quarter Performance Reports

First quarter grades have been stored as of 11/17 and performance reports (report cards) can be viewed on The Source on Monday, December 4th.  By this time, it is possible that the grade listed on The Source for Q1 may not match what is on the performance report.  The Q1 performance report is only a “snapshot” of your student’s cumulative grade for a given class on the date grades were stored.   After storage the teacher may have entered grades for 1st quarter coursework that would change the grade.  This is not anything to be concerned about because 1st quarter grades are not stored on the student transcript.  The grades that really matter are the Semester grades which ARE stored on a student transcript.  Quarter grades give your student a barometer to gauge how they are doing in the class and what may need to be improved to achieve a better mark for the Semester.

Performance reports have been mailed home for any student currently receiving a D or E in any class with helpful tools and resources included for helping students to improve their grade.  All other students will access their performance report via The Source starting on December 4.  There is still plenty of time for students to do make-up work, retest or take advantage of tutoring help to improve their final Semester 1 grade.  Have your student reach out to their counselor if they need assistance with or have concerns about their grades.

Winter Break Reminders

Please remind your student(s) to bring their devices home over Winter Break in the event inclement weather requires remote instruction upon return to school.  Our building will be closed December 18th through January 1st, so students should bring home their musical instruments and anything else they will need over winter break.  Our Lincoln mailbox will be periodically monitored lincoln@seattleschools.org.

From the Nurse

Please make sure your medical records and health information are up to date. We are still missing some required medical documentation such as the authorization forms on file in the health office for students taking medication.  Please submit the forms promptly. Nurse Castro will be contacting students and families with missing information. These forms should be fully filled out by you and your student’s medical provider and returned to the nurse either by email from you or by faxing from the medical provider’s office.  Please call Nurse Castro with any questions at 206-413-2507.

Attention Senior Families

Lincoln’s graduation ceremony for the class of 2024 will be June 14th at Memorial Stadium at 8:00 PM.  More information will be provided closer to the date.

The deadline to place cap and gown orders is rapidly approaching, and in order to get the cheaper price on orders, they need to be submitted by December 15. To place your order, go to Lincoln-Lynx.com, or use the link on the LHS website (student life à seniors). We use an outside vendor for graduation gear, and those orders are placed with them instead of through SchoolPay. While spirit gear orders are shipped to the school throughout the year for distribution, graduation regalia (cap, gown, tassel, stole) are distributed here at Lincoln around the end of April. If you have questions about the products, please call or email National Achiever directly. As always, if you need financial support, please reach out to your student’s counselor.

 Other upcoming senior deadlines include:

  • Senior photos (optional) yearbook deadline is January 15 Upload your senior photos. Additional information about senior photos is available on the LHS website (student life à seniors)
  • Senior parent information meeting – Wednesday January 3 6:30-8:00 here at Lincoln. More info coming soon

From the ASB

Hello Lincoln Community! My name is Elena Matza, I am a senior here at Lincoln on the class of 2024 ASB student council. Recently, we had a student parent reach out to us looking to support our senior class through her salon, “Lalas Cuts”. From November 1st to April 31st, Lalas Cuts will donate 10% of proceeds simply if you mention the “Lincoln Senior Fund” when you go in. Lala has done celebrity haircuts from Katy Perry to Macklemore. She offers hair dye, styling, cuts, and more! To contact Lala, go to her website at lalascuts.com or call 206-883-1754! Proceeds will help Class of 2024 plan our prom and other senior events.
