Orange Shirt Day

September 29, 2023

September 30 is Orange Shirt Day, a day of remembrance for the many Native American, Alaska Native, and First Nations children who were taken from their homes and sent to abusive residential schools between the 1880s and the 1980s. It is an official Canadian holiday, also known as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and is also widely recognized by Indigenous communities in the US. The practice of wearing orange in tribute was started by the writer and activist Phyllis Webstad, whose possessions, including a new orange shirt, were taken away from her on her first day in residential school.

Since it falls on a Saturday, please wear orange on Friday, September 29 to show your support.
