Message from the Principal

In honor and celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Day this week, our students engaged in a phenomenal student-led assembly on Tuesday, put on by our Black Student Union (BSU).  On the topic of education, Dr. King once said “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically.  Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.”  Our student leaders framed a message around empowerment with the purpose “To help empower the next generation of dreamers and leaders.”  Our students had the opportunity to hear from one of two amazing guest speakers – Dr. Estell Williams, Assistant Professor of Surgery at UW and Ms. DarNesha Weary, the owner of Black Coffee Northwest.   

Dr. King has shared, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” I was proud, honored and inspired by the work of our BSU students and the messages they brought to our student body.  If you have not had a chance to talk with your student(s) about their experience at the assembly and their reflections, I encourage taking the time to do that this weekend. I also invite you to read the message from Superintendent Dr. Brent Jones in our tribute to Black Excellence in Seattle Public Schools.  

We are in the final stretch of the semester, which ends on January 31st.  Please take a moment to meet with your student(s) this weekend so that you can build a support plan at home as they complete final projects, assessments, and assignments.  A good question to ask your student is how they are using the Wednesday “walk to support” time. If you have specific questions, I encourage you to reach out to individual teachers.  As a reminder, students have access to BASH on Mondays from 3:45-4:45pm and Thursdays from 7:45-8:45am.  We also have Saturday School, tomorrow, January 20 from 9am-12pm in the library.  

For our 9th-11th graders, registration for next year is continuing with our counselors’ making visits to ELA classes to meet with students individually.  By now, all families should have met with your student on their selections and signed their registration form. 

For our seniors, please bookmark our 2024 Important Senior Dates and Deadlines page for your reference. This is where we will post all upcoming dates and deadlines as we approach graduation in June.  Dates are subject to change, and we will continue to update this page with any additional deadlines.

Inclement Weather Preparedness

In preparation for potential inclement weather, it is important all students have access to a laptop. If your student(s) did not check out an SPS device earlier this school year, they should stop by the library before or after school or at lunch. Since every SPS student has access to a laptop, we can still engage with students even when snow or other extreme weather makes it unsafe to go to school buildings.    

Please remind your student(s) to bring their devices home daily, especially if inclement weather is in the forecast. In the event weather requires remote instruction, students should check their Schoology pages for class links and information. 

Saturday School

Saturday School for this month will be tomorrow, January 20, from  9:00am-12:00pm!  Students are invited to join us for the morning to get help from tutors and staff, work on group projects, and get caught up on coursework. Support will be available for all core, grade-level courses and also for many electives and advanced courses. There is no advance sign-up required.  As always, a grab-and-go pizza lunch will be provided!  This is the last Saturday School of first semester, so let’s end on a strong note!  If you have questions, please contact Michelle Pentecost at mlpentecost@seattleschools.org.

Course Registration

Course registration for the 2024-2025 school year began on January 10.   Our 9th, 10th,  and 11th grade students will be receiving information and selecting their classes for next year. Please take some time to review the LHS Course Catalog to see the latest offerings. Students are encouraged to check the Counseling Schoology page for additional resources for registration. Counselors will host drop-in hours for all students so that they can ask any questions. 

Key dates to note regarding registration: 

• Monday, Jan 8, 2024 – In Mentorship period students will receive a presentation on registration. Students will receive the required sheets (Course Registration Sheet, Credit Tracker, and Transcript). 
• Wednesday, Jan 10 – The Source will open up for students to submit their course selections online.  
• Tuesday, Jan 16 – Course Registration Sheet due to student’s English class. Course selections submitted into The Source by this date. 
• Thursday, Jan 18 – Feb 1 – Counselors will individually meet with students during their English class period in order to verify that their course selections are accurate and match what they’ve entered into The Source. 

LHS Information Night for Incoming Students 

Help spread the word that Lincoln’s High School Information Night for current 8th graders and their families is January 25th from 6:30 to 8:00 PM. This event is reserved for our future 9th graders and their families. We will be sharing pre-recorded videos on our website with all the pertinent information our future Lynx will need. The night itself will host a short assembly followed by an open house in our building with identified areas for each academic program as well as information from student groups, student supports, the Student Based Teen Health Center, athletics and the PTSA.   

Open Enrollment

Every year, Seattle Public Schools (SPS) offers Open Enrollment for School Choice in February. If your student is interested in attending a school outside of their attendance area, families can apply to request a different school through the School Choice process.   

Open Enrollment for School Choice is open Feb. 1-29. This gives students a priority for, but does not guarantee assignment. If the Open Enrollment deadline is missed, families can still submit School Choice applications through Friday, May 31.   

The School Choice form is available on The Source and at the John Stanford Center on Thursday, Feb. 1.

Admissions Fair and SPS Open House   

Join us for the Admissions Fair on Saturday, Jan. 27, at the John Stanford Center, located at 2445 3rd Ave. S, Seattle, WA 98134. School and district department staff will be available to answer questions about their unique school, programs, and the Open Enrollment for School Choice process.  

New students and families can also enroll for the 2024-25 school year. If you plan to enroll a student who is new to SPS, please bring the following.   

• two proofs of address dated within the past two months  
• parent/guardian photo ID  
• student birth certificate or passport (only for those enrolling in kindergarten and first grade),  
• student vaccination records.

From the ASB

Winter Formal is coming up on Saturday, February 3rd, and we need chaperones! Chaperones are essential for us to host a dance, and we need at least 30-40 so that all students who wish to attend can participate. We would appreciate greatly appreciate any all volunteers to help make this a safe and fun dance for all Lincoln students! 

The location for the winter formal is the Pacific Science Center and we will have access to the Butterfly House and most of the exhibits. The time for the dance is expected to be 7PM-10PM.
